The Best Electric Shaver of 2020

We spent nine weeks testing ten of The Best Electric Shaver on the market.

We chose our top 10 by consulting shaver-centric blogs and articles from respected publications like Consumer Reports and user reviews from Amazon.

After having our resident shaving gurus test each of our finalists, we crowned the Panasonic Arc3 ruler of the electric shaving kingdom.

Although the Arc3 is the most basic model of Panasonic shavers, it gives an exceptionally close shave.

This shaver is also quiet and doesn’t have a buzzy motor sound like some of its competitors.

Here’s a list of our top electric shavers.

As previously mentioned, the best shave was the

Panasonic Arc3. The best for
sensitive skin, the Braun

Series 7. The best budget
shaver, the Braun Series 3.

And finally, the best rotary
shaver, the Philips 4500.

And remember, our posts are unsponsored, free of any brand preference.

To help you choose the electric razor that’s right for you, mlet’s begin by explaining the difference between foil and rotary shavers.

Rather than using a single line of scissor blades like hair clippers, electric shavers have a hole filled foil of metals that can press safely against your skin while a blade inside cuts the hair that poke through.

Rotary-type shavers

Foil-type shavers use a half cylinder foil with a set of hoop-shaped blades inside.

These blades buzz back and forth while the foil protects your skin.

Rotary-type shavers have two or three circular foils
with blades running underneath them like little propellers.

These spinning blades are quieter and move more quickly than the blades in a foil type, but they cut in a flat plane.

Which type is right for you?

Well, there’s no hard and fast rule. Most agree that rotary-type shavers work well for some people with thicker hair that grows in different directions.

Foil-type shavers are far more popular and tend to be better for those sensitive skin, straight hair, and anyone who demands precise shaving.

Let’s talk about how we tested our 10 best electric shavers.

First, our two resident shaving enthusiasts tested each shaver for the closeness of the shave.

This was done by testing which designs could get rid of the stubble left by others.

Next, our testers rated the comfort of shaving with each of our finalists.

From our testing, we came to the conclusion that the more expensive shaves cut more efficiently.

Meaning, you don’t have to press the shaver into your skin as much.

Less pressing means less irritation and redness.

With the exception of the Andis ProFoil, all of our finalists were able to work wet.

So we tested them with water and shaving cream to see how they performed during a wet shave.

While some glided more smoothly using this method, others simply snowplowed shaving cream around.

We also tested how these electric shavers performed on a heavy growth left after a four-day weekend.

These rankings were based on two factors.

One, whether the shaver was able to get through the thick stubble for a close shave, and two, whether when faced with a thicker growth, there was a painful pulling sensation.

Next, we ranked each of our finalists on how easy they were to clean.

We were surprised to find that the high-end cleaning stands did not save us much time or effort.

Each cleaning stand insisted that a rinse was necessary before beginning the cleaning cycle.

After we got the hang of using liquid hand soap and water to clean the shavers, we didn’t really see the need for an extra cleaning step.

Lastly, we then tested the battery life of each shaver by seeing how long it took for the battery to completely wear down.

Now let’s get to our top pick, the Panasonic Arc3.

The Arc3 is the most basic Panasonic model.

It features two foils at a center trimming bar like most foil type shavers.

This shaver’s secret weapon is its motor, which is fast, powerful, and quiet.

We prefer the smooth wind of the Panasonic to the runaway sewing machine sound made by the Braun Series 5.

All three of the Panasonic electric shavers we tested tied for closest shave out of our finalists.

They’ll never beat the closeness of a blade and lather, but are great for electric shavers.

While its big brothers, the Arc4 and Arc5, have more foils and can cover more ground in a hurry, the Arc3 offers just as close a shave for a better price.

Unlike competitors which snowplow shaving cream around your face, this razor pairs well with good shaving cream if you want to upgrade your shaving routine.

Cleaning the Arc3 is easy as well even without a pricey cleaning stand.

Just hold down the power button for two seconds to activate Panasonic’s unique sonic vibration cleaning mode to help rinse and dry its blades more thoroughly.

All that said, there is room for improvement.

The Arc3’s cheap velour travel case was a bit of a letdown, especially considering the healthy $80 price.

We were impressed that Panasonic included travel lock mode to prevent your electric shaver from going off in your luggage, but the mechanical lock on the older Panasonic’s was easier to use.

Braun Series 7 The Best Electric Shaver

If you’re looking for a softer shave, our best shaver for sensitive skin was the Braun Series 7.

While our sensitive skin tester complained that the Panasonic Arc3 felt a little scratchy, the Braun Series 7 offered a gentle, whirring caress.

However, you will have to come up with another $80 for this kind of luxury.

The Braun’s battery was the best we tested, running for an incredible 155 minutes.

That also means your battery will have a longer lifespan than other brands in the coming years.

While we thought Braun’s pop-up trimmer was lacking, this shaver felt well-made and came with a nice hard-shell travel case.

You really don’t want to lose this case as the Braun has no travel lock to save you from those awkward buzzing luggage situations at the airport.

This shaver, as well as the Braun Series 5, are sold as CC versions.

This means they come with a cleaning and charging stand.
We didn’t think the cleaning stand was totally necessary, but solo models of this shaver are hard to find and often not much cheaper.

Our testers found that the Series 7 was the most comfortable shave of our finalists.

If you don’t like the feel of a blade shave or have sensitive skin, the Braun is your best choice.

Braun Series 3 The Best Electric Shaver

If you’re on a budget, we recommend checking out our best budget electric shaver, the Braun Series 3 The Best Electric Shaver.

We tested four shavers that were around
$50, and the Series 3 was the best shave of these budget options.

The biggest distinction between the Series 3 and more expensive models was its performance on long stubble.

This shaver was a bit painful when shaving four-day growth.

If you don’t have sensitive skin, you may be fine with it, but if you like to go days without shaving, we think the Series 7 or Panasonic shavers are well worth the extra coin.

This compact shaver comes with a blade cover that acts as a button lock, so it could easily be stashed in a gym bag or a glove compartment.

Overall, we appreciate the simplicity of the Series 3’s design. The Series 3 does not give a very close shave.

While a little stubble may return by the end of the day, this is a good money saving option.

Philips 4500 The Best Electric Shaver

While most people will get a better shave from a foil-type razor than a rotary-type, if you specifically want a rotary shaver, we recommend the Philips 4500 The Best Electric Shaver.

Rotary shavers work best for those who have flat-lying hair in a spiraling pattern.

However, our testers were unhappy with rotary shaver’s maneuverability and performance on long stubble.

One tester even wondered if the rotary shavers were broken.

We tested two rotaries, the Philips 4500 and Phillips 8900.

One detail that pushes the 4500 over its big brother is the trimmer attachment.
The 8900 requires you to physically swap out trimmer heads while the 4500 uses a pop-up trimmer like most other shavers.

This way, you won’t ever accidentally leave your shaver or trimmer at home.

Overall, the 4500 has just as many strengths as the 8900 and is cheaper.

If you don’t like rotary shavers, don’t bother trying the 4500.

However, our tester who liked rotary shavers thought the 4500 was worth the price.

Those are our The Best Electric Shaver.
